Space-Saving Furniture

The right furniture gives you a room that does more with less. These guides look at footprint, scale, and multi-purpose pieces that suit small homes and rentals.

Think about footprint and visual weight

Measure the floor, the doorway and the path between pieces before you shop. In a small room, the clear walkway matters as much as the furniture itself.

Pieces on legs, with open space underneath, show more floor and feel lighter than solid blocks that sit on the ground. Narrow nightstands, slim consoles and wall-mounted shelves keep a room open.

Multi-purpose pieces, such as a bed with drawers, a lift-top coffee table or a fold-down desk, are worth it when you would really use both functions. Check weight limits and the space needed to assemble and open them, and remember that one good large piece usually beats several small ones.
