A Small-Room Sofa: Check Seats, Footprint and Delivery

Two compact sofas can offer very different seating. Compare the space inside the arms, tape out the full depth and check the entire delivery route.

Choose the sofa that gives you usable seats within a footprint your room can handle. Treat delivery fit as a separate check: a sofa fitting its final position does not mean it can reach it.

Compare usable seating, not just overall width

A smaller sofa is not automatically the more efficient sofa. Arms take up part of the advertised width. Ask for the inside width between the arms, plus usable seat depth, rather than relying on a room photograph or the number of cushions.

Here is a simplified hypothetical comparison: a 76-inch sofa with two 8-inch arms leaves 60 inches between them. A 72-inch sofa with two 3-inch arms leaves 66 inches. The second is shorter overall but offers 6 more inches between the arms. Actual shapes vary; use the retailer's inside-width measurement.

Tape the whole footprint, including the chaise

Mark the listed overall width and depth on the floor. Extend the outline for a chaise, recliner or projecting corner. Then mark where cabinet doors open and where people enter the room; the sofa cannot be judged as an isolated rectangle.

Walk through carrying your laundry basket and sit where you normally sit. If the taped outline forces a detour through the seating area, try a shallower sofa or remove the chaise. Your own trial is a fit check, not a substitute for any applicable access or safety requirements.

Separate lounging depth from room depth

Overall sofa depth includes the back and other structure. Usable seat depth is the space you sit on. Ask which measurement is listed and whether it is measured with the back cushions in place.

A deeper seat can suit curling up, while a shallower one may suit sitting upright. Compare with a sofa you find comfortable and, where possible, sit on the candidate. Do not buy a deep sofa for its look if it takes the room space you need without giving you a seat you enjoy.

Check every turn on the delivery route

Record the actual clear doorway width and height, hallway pinch points, stair landings and elevator dimensions. Door hardware, rails and low ceilings can restrict the route. A turn immediately after a doorway needs more assessment than doorway width alone.

Send the measurements and photographs to the retailer. Ask for the assembled, packaged and largest-component dimensions, and what can be removed during delivery. A removable leg does not make the arms or back removable. Do not assume a width comparison guarantees passage around a corner.

Choose an alternative when the route is uncertain

If the retailer cannot confirm a tight route, consider a sofa supplied in smaller components and verify the largest component before ordering. Check building delivery rules and what happens if delivery fails; do this before paying.

An efficient shortlist records inside seating width, full footprint and largest delivery component side by side. Drop a candidate that fails any one of those checks, even if it looks ideal in a styled image.
