Choose shelf depth around your everyday books and filled baskets, then check the installed footprint, load limits and room to pull things out.

Choose the shallowest bookcase that fully supports your essential items, has suitable documented load limits and leaves your preferred movement space. Reject a basket-and-shelf pairing that fits only with overhang or cannot be removed comfortably.

Choose shelf depth from your everyday items
Measure your three largest everyday items before comparing bookcases. For books, record the front-to-back depth in their intended position. For filled baskets, include handles, the closed lid and any bulging sides. Write down each item's depth, width and height; an empty basket can give you the wrong starting dimensions.
Compare that list with usable shelf depth, clear width and opening height. Exterior depth describes the furniture's footprint, not necessarily its storage space. If a listing gives only outside dimensions, request the interior measurements before choosing. Allow enough room to grasp your basket handles; a snug opening may hold the basket but make removal awkward.
Calculate the space gained beside your furniture
Measure from the wall to the opposing sofa or furniture edge where the bookcase will sit. Subtract the unit's exterior depth and its wall stand-off, including any gap caused by the baseboard or required installation. Use the resulting space to compare layouts against a personal movement target based on how you use that route.
Here is a hypothetical comparison: with 54 inches available, a 16-inch-deep unit plus 1 inch of stand-off leaves 54 − 16 − 1 = 37 inches. An 11-inch-deep unit with the same gap leaves 42 inches, gaining 5 inches. But a 12-inch-deep basket exceeds a 10-inch usable shelf by 2 inches. Reject that pairing for fully supported storage. Neither remaining width is a safety or accessibility minimum; check applicable requirements separately.
Check achievable openings and load limits
Check where fixed shelves sit and which adjustment positions are available. “Adjustable” alone does not tell you whether your basket's required opening is achievable. Map your intended items to those openings before buying; creating one tall compartment may leave less useful space for books above it.
Weigh the contents intended for each shelf and compare them with that exact model's documented limits and loading conditions. Check any separate whole-unit limit too. A shelf rating does not establish the unit's total capacity. If the relevant load information is unavailable, skip the purchase rather than assuming a similar-looking bookcase has the same rating.
Test removal, not just storage
Mark the proposed usable shelf depth on cardboard laid on a stable surface. Place your three largest items within it to check support, then mock up the clear opening width and height. Try grasping and withdrawing the filled basket. This catches a failure that dimensions alone can miss: the basket fits, but your hands cannot reach its handles.
Next, tape out the installed footprint, including stand-off. Test where you would stand, pull the loaded basket out and carry it past the sofa. Open shelves leave contents visible. Doors conceal them, but check closed depth, interior dimensions and door swing against nearby furniture. If your essential basket fails either test, consider deeper storage elsewhere.
Confirm access for anchoring
Read the installation instructions before buying. Check the intended wall, suitable fixings and space needed to assemble and anchor the unit, including access above it if specified. Final furniture height alone does not establish installation access. For a rental, check your lease before mounting anything to the wall.
Anchor shelving furniture to the wall to help prevent tip-over injuries. Follow the exact manufacturer's instructions and use a licensed professional where needed. Skip the purchase if required anchoring cannot be completed. Concept images illustrate placement only; pictured baskets and gaps do not verify fit, load capacity or installation safety.
